Let's Run with It - Issue #54: Posture: Bend, Twist, Slouch — And Still Have Great Posture

Hi Reader

You may have noticed there was no issue last week. I had my Dad staying with us and spent some extra time with him. The last few years I've started seeing my Dad through a different aging lens that he is aging and his body is giving out on him. Stairs are now a huge challenge for him. He's of the generation where you just pushed your body through, you didn't work on maintaining strength.

This is one of the reasons I emphasis building strength some much to hopefully keep us more mobile as we age (I say hopefully because this is based on, no having any major health conditions coming on).

I remember getting told growing up I needed better posture and being sent to modelling and deportment classes in the aid of “correct” posture. Many hours walking with books on heads pulling shoulders back standing tall.

Mum saying “Sit up straight, pull your shoulders back”

All of this was well meaning, but what we now know is that posture isn’t just standing up straight.

It’s bigger than just one position.

🧠 Reframing Posture:

Posture is….. all positions of your body in space, that maintain balance whether you're moving or standing still.

(Did you know this already?)

Posture is unique to each individual. The old school of thought that there’s “correct” and “incorrect” posture isn’t this simple (what many of use grew up with).

How your posture is today is going to vary depending on the activities you’ve participated in over your life.

Rather than striving for the one ideal posture we should instead look to create the ability to comfortable move from one position to another.

This part can be the tricky bit, because of the activities you’ve participated in over your life, your body will have created an “optimal” posture for these activities. Which can result in muscle weakness and tightness.

Here’s some practical suggestions to play around with your posture.

Play with variety in your daily movement:

(Remember to always meet your body where it’s at if you have any sharp pain don’t force the movement).

  • Sitting in different positions and seats, even on the floor
  • Bending and twisting your spine in different directions (side, backwards, angles)
  • If you’re always doing the same type of movements look to adjust them slightly.

Of course, muscle strength and stability play a big role to keep your strong to move with ease through different positions.

Posture isn’t about holding one shape: it’s about having the freedom to move between many.
